“Lighter than air” Gay Summer Rick
October 5 – November 4, 2023
The urban coastal environment continues to serve as muse for Gay Summer Rick’s paintings. For this new body of work the artist has delved into an exploration of awe and its ability to captivate and uplift us in troubling times. Floating, hovering, gliding, and flying, are pivotal themes explored in the work to elicit a sense of wonder. Graceful trapeze artists flying through the air, surfers at rest in the lull between waves, glowing reflections created by the setting sun just above the horizon, and objects, as though weightless, hovering overhead, invite the viewer to be transported. Rick uses only palette knives to layer fine sheaths of colors to bring her visions to life. Through sensitively meditated control, she articulates delicate details and creates shimmering atmospheric scenes. In “Lustre”, from above we watch as surfers in the distance float on a calm fuchsia sea.. “Adagio” captures two trapeze artists sweeping through the air, holding each other’s arms in perfect harmony and control. Lighter Than Air provides a path to step away, experience a sense of lightness, peace, calm, quiet, or joy, and take the lift.
Gay Summer Rick’s primary preoccupation is the search for beauty and has found her spending years culling urban landscapes for hidden treasure. A longtime Los Angeles transplant from New York, Rick has used painting to reclaim home and her place in ever changing cityscapes. Rick’s work expresses quiet vibration and the surprising beauty of commonplace elements found in the urban environment. Her work describes this in an atmospheric and dreamlike yet familiar manner. Rick’s paintings are created using palette knives and layered veils of color, and they articulate the pulse of life where the city meets the sea, rendering her work as energetic as the tides that pull the ocean to and from the shore.
“Actor, Agent, Author” Tal Placido
September 12 to October 12
Opening Reception: September 12, 2024
Actor Agent Author is a solo exhibition of paintings by Central New York-based multidisciplinary artist Tal Placido. A compelling exploration of narrative identity, Actor Agent Author is a concept pioneered by personality scientist Dr. Dan P. McAdams that theorizes our personalities unfold across three layers: the social actor, which is about our visible traits; the motivated agent, which involves our goals and values; and the autobiographical author, which is how we stitch our life experiences into stories. Narrative identity is an internalized and evolving story of the self that explains how we came to be who we are and who we are becoming. For the past six years, Tal Placido has been deeply inspired by this theory, which suggests that we are both the historians and the authors of our lives. This body of work serves as an ode to the life stories we craft to make sense of our experiences and the powerful role these narratives play in shaping our identities.
This collection by Tal Placido challenges the fine line between self-understanding and self-importance, as she navigates the tension between the centrality of the ego in narrative identity and the humility required in her artistic process. Her large-scale abstract paintings, primarily executed on vintage and antique textile canvases, recast her internal dialogue into visual form through intuitive mark-making and repeated gestures. The artist employs a combination of acrylic paint, graphite, and oil sticks, worked onto surfaces such as antique tablecloths, to create compositions guided by the textures and histories embedded in these materials.
Actor Agent Author is both an exploration of theory as well as a reflection of Tal Placido’s broader perspective on life—one that emphasizes discovery within the constraints of what is readily available. Her process, which involves purposefully energized mark-making, painting, and erasure, reflects her focus on identifying and utilizing the potential in her surroundings. The result is a series of paintings that encourage viewers to consider the personal myths that shape their identities and relationships, fostering a more intentional and connected way of living.
Tal Placido’s work is a dialogue with her own experiences, translating internal narratives into visual forms. Through her art, she challenges perceptions of limitation and highlights the richness inherent in readily available materials, integrating each element’s historical and cultural narrative into her creative process.
“The Lines” Olympio
Dates: November 7th – 12th, 2024
Opening Reception November 9th, 2024
Olympio’s evocative works invite a profound exploration of form, color, and rhythm. From November 7th to 12th, the exhibition showcase Olympio’s latest body of work, where abstraction and figuration converge in a dynamic interplay of artistic expression. “When I write in my paintings, I’m not just writing. I’m painting, playing music, dancing, there is a balance that I follow, I am developing my own language.” – Olympio
Olympio creates abstract and figurative compositions that reflect his internal rhythms, resulting in bold, expressive paintings. Working intuitively, the artist defines his work as the expression of his energy. Each piece is both everything and nothing; as simple as a heartbeat, as complex as a hurricane. Born in Lomé, Togo, the self-taught West-African artist spent time in Paris before moving to the United States. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Olympio is one of sixty people from across the world selected to be exhibited in “Out of the Fire,” the 14th edition of the Dakar Biennale, one of Africa’s oldest and largest exhibitions of contemporary art in Dakar, Senegal. In 2018, he was listed as one of the top ten artists at Art Basel Miami. Interviews with the artist have been featured on France 2, France 24, rfi, TV5MONDE, BBC and more.
Work by Olympio has been exhibited around the world at museums including: the Latino Art Museum in Pomona, CA; Chiba City Museum of Art in Chiba, Japan; and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art in Tokyo, Japan.
Timothea Stewart
Timothea’s artistic journey spans over four decades, marked by a rich interplay of creativity, exploration, and personal transformation. After a year of intensive drawing and painting in Spain, she was awarded a prestigious painting and living studio at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Immersed in a vibrant community of international musicians, composers, sculptors, and painters, Timothea’s time in Paris was both inspiring and transformative. Her talent quickly gained recognition, leading to participation in exhibitions both within Paris and beyond.
During these formative years, she began crafting a deeply personal visual language, inspired by her surroundings and experiences. Her connection to the musical life of Paris, influenced by her marriage to a musician, further enriched her artistic expression.
As her life evolved, so did her career. Transitioning from painting to consulting, Timothea collaborated with museums, private collectors, and art dealers. Upon returning to California, she established herself as an art consultant and opened a Los Angeles gallery. Her debut exhibition celebrated Wallace Berman, a pioneer of assemblage art and a key figure in post-war California’s art history.
Timothea’s journey took an introspective turn during her later years in Paris, when she began experiencing a series of serendipitous events that defied logical explanation. These encounters ignited a spiritual awakening, propelling her toward personal growth and inner exploration. Following this path, she facilitated experiential seminars and engaged in service work, which became an extension of her creative practice.
After a significant hiatus, Timothea returned to painting, prompted by a class that explored spiritual masters. This period marked a resurgence of creativity, with vivid inner imagery guiding her work. Her paintings evolved into a series of dynamic triptychs, each exploring energy, vibration, and bold color harmonies. While the triptychs stand individually, they also form cohesive narratives, amplifying their impact when experienced together.
Timothea’s work continues to delve into themes of energy, time, space, and the interplay of form and the formless. Her paintings are deeply rooted in her spiritual journey and personal exploration, offering viewers an opportunity to connect with the energy and intention behind each piece.
Timothea’s art reflects a life devoted to both creativity and introspection, inviting audiences to engage with her world and discover their own interpretations. Her works, whether viewed individually or as part of a series, stand as a testament to the enduring power of artistic expression and the beauty of transformation.
Jayne Cooper
Artistic passion almost never follows a straight and narrow path. It evolves and becomes more expressive and powerful with each brush stroke. Such is the journey for Los Angeles artist, Jayne Cooper. Her path from child prodigy to becoming an internationally recognized figurative artist has followed the twists and turns of a rich creative life.
Jayne’s natural talents were recognized at a very early age when she won awards for her striking colors and figures. She traveled extensively in Europe as a young adult, where her artistic sensibilities were shaped by her exposure to Picasso, Rothko and Henry Moore—influences that clearly resonate in her current work.
Moving back to Los Angeles, she became an in-demand cosmetologist for film and music celebrities, which also had a profound impact on the development of her signature figurative art. When she wasn’t shaping the images of her clients, she was making hundreds of drawings and paintings that translated her client work into the abstract visual vocabulary that shapes the work she is producing today.
Jayne currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, and has been featured in numerous galleries, art fairs and exhibitions,

Tal Placido
Tal Placido is a multidisciplinary artist based in Central New York and engages primarily in large-scale abstract paintings. Through her work, she challenges perceptions of limitation and emphasizes the richness inherent in readily available materials. Drawn to using found items such as vintage linens and unique textiles, Tal Placido integrates each element’s history and story into her creative process. Her artistic approach is characterized not by the grandiosity of abundant resources but by the discovery within the constraints of what is available, reflecting her broader perspective on life where she focuses on identifying and utilizing the potential in her surroundings.
In her art, Tal Placido employs a diverse range of mediums, including acrylic paints, oil pastels, and graphite, to explore themes deeply connected to her identity and heritage as a first-generation Filipino American. These themes are a significant part of her narrative, providing a lens through which she examines broader cultural and personal dialogues.
With a creative career spanning almost two decades, Tal Placido has also established herself as a performing and recording artist and a creative designer.
Gay Summer Rick
Gay Summer Rick paints atmospheric scenes that reveal an unexpected beauty in commonplace elements within the urban coastal landscape. Sparsely populated and rendered with a keen sense of place, her poetically abstracted paintings are at once dreamlike and familiar. In Rick’s vision, broad skies, calm seas, buildings, structures, and elements in the landscape are often silhouetted or bathed in the luminosity of clear, blue-white light or set aflame inside a warm, blood-orange glow that radiates beyond the canvas. Though not overtly realist, these scenes capture the energy and movement of the observable world. Claiming influences from Diebenkorn to Rothko and Turner, her unique style melds impressionism and color-field painting to describe the quiet vibration of life where the city meets the sea.
Guided by a deep commitment to sustainability, Rick employs innovative techniques to minimize her environmental impact. She applies pure pigments using only palette knives and treats the paint architectonically, layering, carving, and accumulating it, but never discarding. In this way, she completely avoids toxic solvents and prevents material waste.
Growing up in New York surrounded by artists, Rick experienced life with an immersive arts education. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University, where she drew, painted, and sculpted images on clay – handling clay like paint. After receiving a Master’s degree, she made painting the primary focus of her art practice – now, in a sense, almost handling paint like clay. A resident of Southern California for over 25 years, she maintains studios in Inglewood and Malibu.
Gay Summer Rick regularly exhibits in California and Hawaii, and has shown in Japan, Europe, and across the United States. Her paintings have been featured in museum, gallery, and public art exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her work has received numerous awards and honors, and she belongs to the Oil Painters of America, California Art Club, and Malibu Art Association. Her paintings are held in corporate and private collections around the world.
